A sidney prize is an award given by academic institutions to recognize the achievements of individuals or students. These prizes may come in the form of money, awards, honors or recognition of work – some are awarded for academic performance while others relate more specifically to certain subject areas. Often students do not need to apply in order to be considered for such prizes but applications with work can sometimes be necessary in order to be considered.

Mercer University’s Southern Studies Program will award Wendell Berry with the 2024 Sidney Lanier Prize for Southern Literature on April 23 in Presidents Dining Room within University Center on campus. This event is free and open to the public; prize ceremony takes place April 23. Mercer is proud of their literary history as it celebrates longstanding writing traditions about the South such as its Sidney Lanier Prize ceremony honors their heritage with literary writing about it.

Overland magazine and Malcolm Robertson Foundation are hosting The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize to recognize outstanding short fiction that explores travel; imaginative, creative and literary interpretations are welcome. The winner will receive $5000 prize money, while both runners-up will each be given $750 as runners-up awards. Furthermore, Overland will publish the winning story in their autumn 2024 issue of Overland.

To honor Professor Sidney Cox’s memory as an English instructor from 1927 to 1952 at Dartmouth, this prize honors any undergraduate writing that most closely meets the high standards set forth by him during both teaching and his book Indirections for Those Who Want to Write. Essay, poem and play writing in English are eligible; its judges include Antony Mottershead along with Robert Frost, A. B. Guthrie and Budd Schulberg as honorary chairman respectively and active chairman, among others.
