Roullete, or roulette, is a casino game in which players wager on which red or black compartment of a rotating wheel will house a small ball when it eventually comes to rest. Originating in Europe in the late 18th century, bets against “the house” are placed against winning odds; bets may include single numbers, groupings of numbers, colors (red/black) or whether the number is odd/even. There are various different forms of bets such as these and winning wagers are paid out according to odds; betting against “house” winning bets are paid out according to odds compared to winning odds; winning bets pay out according to odds as per odds; winning bets may include single numbers as well as various groupings/groupings/color bets/odddness/odness of each.

The roulette wheel consists of a solid, slightly convex disk with 36 compartments painted alternately black and red, as well as one green division which typically bears either zero or double zero on European wheels and double zero or single zero on American tables respectively. This spinning surface is balanced on an axle made of smooth metal.

Players place their bets by laying chips on a betting mat before spinning the wheel. Each type of bet has an identifiable location on the table with precise instructions for placing each chip. Players also have the opportunity to alter or switch bets prior to throwing.

Once the wheel has stopped spinning, its dealer, croupier or other official will announce which number was hit and reward any winning bettors with their winnings tallied and chips distributed amongst them.

Though many claim otherwise, no reliable evidence can support claims that any betting system can make roulette profitable. If a player can find an unfair wheel and bet opposite popular bets they might increase their odds of success; however this strategy is uncommon as most professional gamblers avoid attempts at game manipulation.
